How to Record Video While Playing Music on iPhone

You’ve probably noticed that your iPhone stops playing music as soon as you switch to Video mode inside its Camera app, which prevents you from easily adding a soundtrack to your recordings. But there is a simple trick that lets you shoot video while your music continues to play.

The trick works in all versions of iOS 14 (including the latest iOS 14.5 betas) and requires no third-party apps. We’ll show you how to use it.

Apple likely pauses your music while you prepare to shoot video on iPhone for a number of reasons. Not only is it convenient for the user (in most cases you won’t want your music to continue playing while you’re recording), but it also avoids the inevitable copyright complications.

That doesn’t mean, however, that recording video while playing music simultaneously on iPhone isn’t completely impossible.

How to Record Video While Listening to Music on iPhone

  • Open the Camera app on your iPhone device.
  • Keep your camera in photo mode instead of going straight to the video section.
  • Make sure your chosen music is playing in the background.
  • Hold down the shutter icon you’d usually press to take a picture.
  • You can then choose to keep holding this down or drag it to the right side of the screen to lock it in place to keep recording.
  • Tap the red square in the center of the screen to end the recording.

Can You Play Music and Record Audio at the Same Time on iPhone?

The simple answer to this question is yes, but you will have to use a third-party tool for this method. To get started, follow the steps mentioned above and record a video with music in the background. You can now use any method to convert this video into audio. We recommend using an app called Instagram since it is easy to use.

  • Open a music player app and play the track of your choice.
  • Launch Instagram and swipe right from the Home tab to go to the recording screen. Or, you can also tap on the Your Story icon instead.
  • Tap and hold the shutter button to start recording a video.
  • Note that you can only record up to 60 seconds on Instagram. The music will keep playing as you record the video.
  • Release the button once you have completed the recording. Then, tap on the Download icon to download the video.
